Duties

Help

  • Serves as a Writer/Editor in the Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Operations Division;
  • Proofreads, copy-edits, and provides substantive editing for a variety of written work and complex materials for diverse audiences for internal and external dissemination by BJA, including solicitations; funding recommendation memos; congressional reports; PowerPoint presentations; fact sheets; frequently asked questions; leadership, and controlled correspondence; research and data briefs; policy guidance; Op-eds; speeches and talking points; testimony; newsletter content; and social media and web content;
  • Writes a variety of written products about criminal justice related programs, projects, and initiatives;
  • Research, writes, and edits a variety of criminal justice related materials that are complex or controversial;
  • Ensures that material in existing products is current and that new written products or updates of existing products are accurate, timely, comprehensive, and objective.
  • Develops, reviews, maintains, and oversees BJA standard language which clearly articulates, interprets, and explains BJA programs, priorities, internal/external processes, and document templates. Shares language with BJA staff to assist in the development of presentations, publications, marketing materials and other resources for the field, and for responding to requests.
  • Maintains the BJA Style Guide, to include routine reviews and revisions, ensuring alignment with OJP and DOJ requirements. Serves as an expert resource for BJA staff on requirements outlined in the Guide. Ensures all external-facing materials comply with BJA style, templates, and organizational messaging.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience:

Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level. Specialized experience is experience which is in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Examples of specialized experience include:

  • Proofreading, performing substantive editing, and copy-editing of complex written material;
  • Ensuring edited materials are formatted correctly, free of typos, grammatical errors, and all content is correct;
  • Ensuring clarity, consistency, completeness, plain language adherence, and application of style guides, organizational branding/messaging, and template usage;
  • Developing and/or maintaining a system for writing, tracking, and updating organizational boilerplate language, style guides, templates, and website content encompassing all organization's written products.

  • This position has a duty station of Washington, D.C. The selectee will be required to physically report to the OJP office building at least four (4) days per bi-weekly pay period and may incorporate leave and official travel plans into this reporting requirement. The office director or supervisor may request the selectee's presence in the office more frequently, as determined by the needs of the office. The selectee will be responsible for covering all commuting-related travel expenses. OJP employees are eligible for one transportation benefit - parking or the Department of Justice (DOJ) transit subsidy.
