Duties

Help

You will serve as advisor to the Director of Health, Safety, Work-Life (CG-11) and CG-111, and as the Chief, Family Services Division. The primary focus of the position involves policy development, serving as the Coast Guard (CG) representative on a variety of internal and external working groups pertaining to or affecting family services policy, fiscal and personnel resource planning, and program management and evaluation for these programs CG-wide.

Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team.  Some of the typical work assignments include:

  • Serving as the senior policy expert and primary technical advisory to CG-11 and CG-111 on the CG’s family services programs.
  • Planning and implementing nationwide programs dealing with a variety of family and unit issues and concerns that require innovative approaches; evaluating proposals for systems and/or programs required to meet existing or anticipated operational problems, challenges, and changes in the
    operations environment.
  • Overseeing all aspects of family services program training, including definition of requirements, requirement prioritization, and quota management for work-life professionals and field personnel from all operational and support communications
  • Investigating new developments in family services program procedures, strategies, and technologies for service-wide implementation.
  • Formulating policies and program objectives designed to promote quality family and community services for CG and family members.
  • Ensuring that long-range plans are developed in concert with the Directorate and Office goals and strategies, as well and Commandant and
    Departmental goals and objectives.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  Degree in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

OR

Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, candidates must have specialized experience as identified below.

GS-15:  In addition to meeting the basic education requirements above, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level in the Federal sector.  Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular, knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically related to this line of work.  Examples of specialized experience include Using a variety of Federal, State and local human services laws, policies, procedures, and regulations; knowledge of social services delivery systems and concepts, principles, and theories; engaging in the identification, referral, case management, and follow-up of individuals and families involved in complex special needs issues; establishing and maintaining working relationships using tact and diplomacy in interacting with individuals, families, military and community agencies, and other internal and external governmental program managers.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This is a supervisory position, under provisions of the Civil Service Reform Act, first time supervisors and/or managers will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
