Duties

Help

As a HEALTH TECHNICIAN, GS-0640-08, you willdevelop plans, procedures, goals and objectives in support of the Aerospace Medicine and Force Health Management Programs using an extensive knowledge of Department of Defense (DOD), Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA), United States Air Force (USAF) and Air National Guard (ANG) directives, policies and standards. Programs include physical examinations and standards, flight medicine and related aero medical and force health management concerns. Interprets directives and applies standards to determine worldwide deployability of personnel. Advise and makes recommendations to senior officials on force health issues related to physical exams, standards and flight medicine activities to ensure compliance. Determine requirements, requests funding and administers accounts for procurement of supplies, equipment, and medical assessment in support of the physical exam process, flight medicine activities and related programs. Implements and maintains the information management systems utilized for aerospace medicine and force health protection programs. Systems include preventive health assessment (PHA) and individual medical readiness (PIMR), Aero medical Information Management Waiver Tracking System (AIMWTS), Physical Exam Processing Program (PEPP), Grounding Management Information System (GMIS) and other related programs. Work Schedule: This position works on a 5/4/9 compressed work schedule that consists of a 5 day workweek, then a 4 day workweek ( 8 nine-hour days and 1 eight-hour day and an SDO, Scheduled Day Off) to complete the 80 hour pay period. Work schedule is subject to change based on mission requirements.
Telework: ELIGIBLE FOR SITUATIONAL TELEWORK ONLY, INCLUDING EMERGENCY AND PRESCRIBED "UNSCHEDULED TELEWORK"

  • May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.
  • May be required to travel by car, in military and/or commercial aircraft, and by other means of transportation as appropriate to perform temporary duty assignments.
  • The work may require the incumbent to drive a motor vehicle; if so, and an appropriate valid driver's license is mandatory.
  • Must be able to obtain required certifications, as applicable.
  • Position designated as Essential and may be subject to duty in preparation for, or in response to, a state emergency or disaster declaration. This designation will not exceed 14 calendar days per year unless otherwise approved in advance by the TAG.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance within a year of appointment
  • Irregular and compensatory hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies.
  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle and if so, an appropriate valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have a validated understanding of the basic principles and concepts of the occupational series and grade, based on the type of experiences gained through related military technical medical training schools and/or completed medical courses from private or public accredited technical schools or colleges, may include these experiences to qualify for the position. For a new hire federal civil service applicant, he or she should have competent experiences that are equivalent or commensurate to the DoD public health program business with demonstrated understandings of the program's principles and concepts as defined by the applicable NG Title 5 Excepted Service Series GS-0640 position description.


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have the specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, monitoring the medical status of military personnel, experiences in performing public health program work and managing public health activities. Experienced in functions such as, routine food safety and defense inspection; sanitary evaluations; communicable disease control and disease intervention; occupational health; force health management activities, PHA cell, medical entomology programs and public health medical readiness programs. Knowledge is mandatory of basic biological and physical sciences; preventive medicine; fundamentals of microbiology; chemistry; anatomy; physiology; and pathology of the human body.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary, such as sitting comfortably. There may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items. No special physical effort or ability is required to perform the work.

Work Environment: The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions.

Education

NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
