Duties

Help
  • Plans, organizes, and manages the implementation of SSA’s public information programs in accessible formats to ensure compliance with section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1973.
  • Takes a lead role in defining and articulating national communication objectives as they involve accessible media and 508 compliance.
  • Determines effective means of providing accessible communications to specific audiences, considers attitudes, needs, educational levels, locations, mobility and other pertinent factors affecting various audiences.
  • Captions verbatim real-time broadcasts and post-production video products for the hearing impaired as required by Federal regulations.
  • Cont'd: Writes what is heard on a computerized stenotype machine; writes spoken words verbatim; adds appropriate punctuation to aid in the clarification of statements.
  • Cont'd: Helps viewers follow real-time and prerecorded verbal communications; and captions and transmits information instantaneously with no review of captioned information.
  • Cont'd: or ability to correct or clarify information once it has been released to the public.

Qualifications

To qualify for this GS-13 position, the applicant must have 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent that is in or related to the work of the position to be filled, and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience must include:

(1.) Experience providing real-time captioning for live events; AND
(2.) Experience setting up captioning equipment (steno machine, computers, displays, etc.) to provide captioning services on-site.

LOCALITY PAY: Salary will be set in accordance with locality pay provisions. Candidates currently receiving a higher locality pay than the office applied for are advised that should they be selected, they will lose entitlement to the higher locality pay.
