Help

As a Epidemiologist, you will:

  • Identifies and analyzes public health issues and their impact on public policies or scientific studies or surveys. Analyzes study or project implementation procedures for improvement; works with program specialists and/or scientists as appropriate, to develop more viable implementation procedures and coordinates with appropriate staff to make needed changes. Consults on, monitors, and measures the outcome of assigned programs through studies that evaluate the effectiveness of subject activities in meeting the needs of program participants.
  • Provides scientific advice and technical assistance to various public, private, and/or nonprofit health and/or health-related agencies and organizations for specific complex programs or issues where the type of resources provided, and/or the impact on communities is extensive so program needs require the application of advanced scientific and technical methods and practices.
  • Assists in the writing of comprehensive statistical and analytic reports from major studies or continuing projects that require the use of sociological behavioral science, demographic, and/or epidemiologic analytic techniques and evaluation, and application of the latest technology. Collaborates with analysts and statisticians to develop joint analyses and publications.
  • Participates in the syntheses of social science and epidemiologic data to be applied toward designing effective prevention programs and practice guidelines. The incumbent will work with public health officials and other scientists inside and outside of CDC to ensure that valid research findings are disseminated, used, and applied to prevention programs.

Due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) process enhancement to use Shared Certificates throughout the Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), some of the requirements below may differ:

  • his position may be subject to the OGE Financial Disclosure requirements of the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 (P.L. 95-521). CDC inspires public confidence in its trust responsibilities and mission by maintaining high ethical principles. If selected, you may be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE Form 450) to determine if a conflict or an appearance of a conflict exists between your financial interest and your prospective position with the agency. If identified, this will be an annual requirement.
  • In accordance with Executive Order 12564 of September 15, 1986, The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is A Drug-Free Federal Workplace. This position may require a Drug Test and be subject to Random Drug Testing. The position may require the submission of a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative test result.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained

.In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements, applicants must meet the specialized experience as stated below:

Minimum Qualifications:
GS-13: To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: designing, overseeing, implementing, and conducting scientific/studies or projects; identifying and solving public health problems and health hazards and recommending improvements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. There is a maximum of 10 years on a single term appointment.

Current permanent status CDC employees will be processed using a Term appointment. The selectee will not have statutory return rights. Subsequent employment for CDC positions must be through the appropriate competitive process or special employment program hiring authorities. You must apply to the merit promotion announcement for statutory return rights to your permanent CDC position title, series, and grade.

Important Note for Applicants Outside of CDC: Other current permanent status HHS or other agency employees will be hired on a term appointment. There are no statutory return rights. Subsequent employment for CDC positions must be through the appropriate competitive process or special employment program hiring authorities.
