Duties

Help
  • Executes timber cruises/assists with preparing and developing timber cruise and sample surveys to develop resource information and estimate quality and quantity of timber for purpose of appraisal, sales administration, management and logging plans.
  • Assembles and summarizes data, and prepares reports and maps regarding areas cruised.
  • Lays out sales in accordance with EAR and other instructions, considering variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife impacts, fuels management and regeneration requirements.
  • Brings to attention of responsible individual situations where specific prescriptions do not fit ground conditions.
  • Independently marks trees using and adapting complex marking rules in areas complicated by variations in type, species composition, defect, site, age, class, etc.
  • Assists in the preparing timber sale appraisals considering resource protection needs, cooperative changes, volume estimates, logging methods, improvement and regeneration needs, etc.
  • Assists in preparing contract package. Explains appropriate rules, regulations and contract provisions to prospective purchasers and operators.
  • Prepares timber sale reports, describing resource and topographic features; prepares timber sale maps, recommends or drafts EAR provisions, prepares tentative logging plans.
  • Monitors and inspects timber sale operations having conventional contract requirements and conditions. Interprets, explains, and enforces timber sale contract provisions and Forest Service procedures, policies, and standards.
  • Prepares written reports of all sale inspections and follows up on deficiencies. Reports all findings and provides documentation to sale administrator.
  • Performs other multifunctional work as assigned such as wildlife, TSI, reforestation and fire control duties. Administers timber sales having common contract requirements and conditions.
  • Monitors and inspects timber sale operations having common contract requirements and conditions.
  • Interprets and explains standard timber sale contract provisions, and technical methods to be employed to the timber operator. Informs supervisor of problems that have an effect on other forest resources or accuracy of marking and scaling.
  • Performs inspection of timber sale areas for compliance with standard contract clauses governing location and construction of nonsystem roads, fire prevention, personal safety precautions, and cutting provisions. Reports noncompliance to supervisor
  • Prepares written reports of sale inspections and makes follow-ups on deficiencies. Recommends acceptance of the contract for closure.

Qualifications

GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5).

GS-06: There is no substitution of education for this position.

Examples of specialized experience include: Provided support with tree measurements, map reading and compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, traversing, use of aerial photos, and use of timber cruising tools and techniques; Interprets silvicultural prescriptions and timber marking guides to designate harvest timber; Measured amount and quantity of timber in designated timber sale areas; Applied instructions issued in a cruise plan.
