Duties

Help
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Interpret technical instructions, specifications, work orders, and blueprints.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, makes repairs and maintains heating, air conditioning, chillers, humidification, water treatment, boiler plant, diesel generator, pumps and specialized equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs all walk-in coolers, air handlers, and heat exchangers.
  • Controls the air balance and air treatment to the different areas of the facility.
  • Maintains the dust collection systems in all environmental areas and cleans, balances, and lubricates motors, replaces worn bearings and belts, and performs electrical repairs.
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, and tests new and existing electrical circuits and systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.
  • Installs, modifies and repairs new and existing plumbing systems which may include water, steam, and waste.
  • Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance on equipment using specialized testing equipment and tools.

  • This position requires the incumbent to work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, as well as stand, stoop, bend, climb, and kneel frequently for extended periods of time.

  • This position may be assigned to a work shift other than first shift, or which includes weekend days and holidays.
  • This position is subject to an on-call rotation or to call-out work overnight or on their normal days off.

The following Selective Placement Factor (SPF) requirement is being used to determine whether an applicant fully qualifies for this position. The incumbent is required to have current refrigeration type l and type 2 certification to handle refrigerants, per EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act . Evidence of this experience must be documented in your resume. Applicants who fail to meet this requirement and/or address the SPF may lose further consideration.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:

  • Ability to do the work of a utility systems repairer-operator without more than normal supervision
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
