Duties

Help
  • Responsible for safe, efficient operation of a variety of wheeled agricultural tractors, attached implements, and other equipment.
  • Including: specialized equipment that may be highly modified or fabricated for nursery cultural operations; rotary or flail lawn mowers, chemical or fertilizer broadcasters.
  • May also include: trailers, rollers, grass harvesting combines, bed formers, rototillers, forklifts, backhoes, and other equipment used to perform a variety of nursery tasks;
  • May also include: tractor drawn or truck mounted sprayers to apply pesticides; and light trucks to transport equipment and debris to and from work sites.
  • Performs routine operator maintenance on equipment, e.g., adding oil/gas, tightening loose bolts, and performing operator safety pre-work inspections. Attaches equipment to tractors and adjusts for proper heights, depth, spacing and spreading.
  • Calibrates seeding, spraying, and other application equipment. Sets up and operates equipment within narrow tolerance limits to prepare fields, culture, and harvest a wide variety of nursery plant materials.
  • Utilizes computer equipment such as hand held units and bar code scanners to access treatment prescriptions, identify specific lots of plant materials, and record field/plant lot locations.
  • Enters treatment and other accomplishment data into portable units for nursery records. Enters site, field, plant, and other condition observations as part of the nursery monitoring program.
  • Completes written records of work activities.
  • Performs support duties related to irrigation, seedling inventory, seedling transplanting, grounds maintenance, and greenhouse operation.
  • Operates motor vehicles on public roads and highways as well as installation roads.
  • Assists with the maintenance and operation of various irrigation systems. Repairs and replaces above ground and underground PVC pipe from 1/2" to 10".
  • Installs fittings to include elbows, couplings, nipples, compression fittings, adapters, reducers and values. Replaces sprinkler heads.
  • Operates a forklift, front-end loader, backhoe and lighter trucks to include skills in handling controls for starting, stopping, backing, and driving.
