Duties

Help
  • Informs the public of Forest Service recreation rules and regulations, traffic control, accident prevention, campground and picnic area operations, visitor information services, and miscellaneous recreation program activities.
  • Answers routine questions that require knowledge of a limited variety of facts, events, circumstances, personalities, and natural characteristics identified with the site.
  • Checks the usage and condition of public use areas, boat ramps, group camps, and other recreation areas for safety, fire, sanitation and maintenance reasons. Collects, compiles, and reports routine visitor and resource use statistics.
  • Assists with the visitor center’s program operations by either working at the information desk or at the entrance station by dealing with questions pertaining to picnic facilities, campgrounds, visitor control, and fee collection.
  • Maintains supply of informational materials and other stock items for distribution. Distributes publications requested in telephone and mail inquiries.
  • Collects fees and book sale monies.
  • Performs routine daily opening and closing procedures and assists with general office tasks.
  • Operates and performs minor maintenance on audiovisual equipment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

GS-03: (6) six months of general experience and (3) three months of specialized experience

General Experience is defined as: Administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public.

Specialized experience is defined as: Answering routine visitor and/or public inquiries; assisting with checking the usage and conditions of public use and recreation areas; and maintaining the supply of educational materials and items for distribution. -OR Successful completion of 1 year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in a combination of courses such as - natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. -OR Completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than one year at a technical school or through a military training program that included 6 semester/9 quarter hours in a combination of courses such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences. (Courses of this type normally require completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction rather than the usual 20 hours per week, are of at least three months duration, and are specific to the work in the position.)-OR A combination of education and experience listed above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire.
