Duties

Help
  • Responsible for making regular channel patrols of the Lower Mississippi River, primarily in Memphis and Vicksburg Districts, and occasionally in St Louis District.
  • Directs movement of boat in sounding by use of automatic depth finder.
  • Drafts reports of navigation channels conditions and changes for preparation of Notice to Navigation Interests bulletins issued for guidance of commercial navigators.
  • Performs frequent towing and is responsible for determining size of tow commensurate with capacity of vessel, strength of lines and fastenings for security of tow.
  • Supervises making up tows, landings, and disposition of plant towed at destination.
  • Renders guidance to pilots when unusual conditions are encountered.

Qualifications

Work schedule: This position requires frequent mandatory overtime and weekend work, and occasional shift work. During towing season the work schedule is 12 hour shifts. During Lay-up work schedule is 40 hours a week.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) First Assistant Engineer, Towboat (DR) without more than normal supervision. Standing a regular watch and is responsible for the engine room work activities during that shift; diagnose problems and malfunctions; and participate in the repair, replacement, and modification of such machinery, engines, and systems.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent is required to exert light to moderate effort when operating controls and observing conditions while underway and moderate effort during general maintenance. Coordination of hand and eye is necessary to operate controls while maneuvering in confined channels and harbors. Strength of arms and legs, good balance and physical agility are needed to move and work when the boat is moving violently in storm and tide rip conditions.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Employee is exposed to the prevailing weather for short periods, which includes hot sun, fog, rain, spray, wind, snow and ice. Most work is performed in the shelter of the pilot house. Possible injuries include bruises or broken bones from falls on wet or moving surfaces or steep stairways.
