Help

The Water Treatment Plant Operator works under the direction of the Utilities Branch Chief, who provides oral and written instructions and relies upon the incumbent to accomplish the assigned work operations within the limits of policies and basic schedules set by management officials and state regulatory boards. The Water Treatment Plant Operator serves as the wastewater treatment plant with a peak wet weather flow of 3.036 million gallons per day (MGD), and an average dry weather flow of 0.197 MGD, with secondary and tertiary treatment and discharge.

Typical work assignments include:

  • Tertiary Wastewater Treatment - ensuring that the plant produces a high-quality effluent by using the unit processes of wastewater treatment pumping stations/collection system: primary treatment of wastewater via screening and grit removal, secondary treatment via activated sludge with biological nutrient removal (BNR), tertiary treatment via chlorination and ultraviolet disinfection, and effluent storage and disposal via irrigation.
  • Physical, chemical and biological analyses - using proper sampling techniques for domestic waste, per Standard Methods for the examination of water and waste. Interpreting results and making required changes in physical/chemical control per established procedures.
  • Standardized reporting - preparing reports designed to meet Federal and State regulations and submits results to appropriate regulatory agencies. Utilizing the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to operate and maintain all equipment instruments in coordinated fashion.
  • Maintaining all equipment including manual, pneumatic and electrically operated valves, dry solution and chemical feed systems, flocculators, coagulators, aerators, skimmers, sludge transfer and drying equipment, instrumentation, pumps, filters, clarifiers, nitrification reactors and other equipment used for treatment process control.
  • Conducting maintenance, inspections, corrective actions, and related service in full compliance with applicable local, state, federal, health and Enviromental Protection agency (EPA) laws and regulations.
  • Assisting with the maintenance of existing treatment facilities or delivers for testing, weekly samples of treated water as needed and performs corrective maintenance to return system and equipment to proper operation.

This position has been designated, "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Qualifications

Student Loan – Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent or term position may be eligible for student loan repayment up to $10,000 (pre-tax) for one calendar year. More than one loan may be repaid if the combined repayments do not exceed $10,000. Receipt of this incentive will require a three-year service agreement.

Recruitment Incentive: Selectee(s) for this position who are newly appointed to a permanent position are authorized to receive a one-time recruitment incentive of 25% of the salary, including locality for this position. Receipt of the bonus will require a 12-month service agreement.
