Duties

Help
  • You will perform the duties encompassing all phases of the industrial hygiene program as specified by the Department of Defense, Department of Navy, and Bureau of Medicine and Surgery directives as well as the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations.
  • You will research the chemical and toxicological literature, develop and/or recommend individualized methods and approaches to obtain a valid and complete evaluation.
  • You will evaluate/review the results of sampling performed by themselves, other industrial hygienists or industrial hygiene technicians to statistically determine if occupational exposures are in excess of published health standards.
  • You will prepare preliminary and final technical reports of studies, surveys, investigations and after laboratory sample analysis, incorporating into the report medical surveillance and engineering findings and recommendations.
  • You will present oral briefs, if requested, and provides detailed written reports of IH survey findings including hazards identified, assessment of the hazards, exposure monitoring required, and controls recommended.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

  • In accordance with BUMEDINST 6220.9B, all personnel, including direct and indirect care providers, volunteers, students, and others who may come in contact with patients, must be immunized on an annual basis against influenza.

Qualifications

GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience and knowledge conducting Industrial Hygiene Surveys in diverse industrial environments.
  • Experience with Industrial Hygiene monitoring equipment, personal noise dosimeters, sound level meters, personal air sampling equipment, velometers, and indoor air quality equipment.
  • Experience making medical surveillance recommendations based on professional judgement and exposure monitoring data.
  • Experience analyzing Industrial Hygiene Exposure monitoring and communicating the results and recommendations orally and in written format.
  • Experience training junior and senior staff in Industrial Hygiene practices and equipment.
GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience and knowledge conducting Industrial Hygiene Surveys in diverse industrial environments.
  • Experience with Industrial Hygiene monitoring equipment, personal noise dosimeters, sound level meters, personal air sampling equipment, velometers, and indoor air quality equipment.
  • Experience determining the need for and proper monitoring for chemical, physical, and biological stressors in the workplace.
  • Experience communicating survey findings through oral and written communication.
  • Experience with data entry in MS Office Suite software (Word, Excel).

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

Basic Requirements: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH).
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

FOR GS-11: SUCCESSFUL completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR LL.M. if related

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

PPP applicants will be placed at the FPL, if determined Well Qualified (WQ). To receive priority consideration, the FPL must be the same grade level or equivalent of the retained grade or the grade held immediately prior to separation.
