Duties

Help
  • Overhaul, maintain, and repair various types of small arms aid accessories of regularly and widely used design, and weapons which have unusual operation principles or critical operation tolerances.
  • Incorporate changes to increase the accuracy and reliability, and/or modifying other characteristics to fit the weapons use for which it was not specifically designed.
  • Disassemble guns to examine critical parts for wear or damage using micrometers and precision gages.
  • Modify weapons by replacing old parts with new parts of modified design or making changes such as reaming out a hole or smoothing off rivet heads.
  • Contribute to the design or redesign of small arms by making or reshaping parts in accordance with engineering directives and drawings to arrive at a practical solution of the fabrication objectives.
  • Perform acceptance, initial, line, and final inspections in the shop and in the field of small arms up to and including: M249, M2, M240B, M4, M16, M107, M203, MK19, and M9.
  • Disassemble automatic pistols, revolvers, shotguns, automatic rifles, and sub-machine guns, ranging from 22 Caliber to 50 caliber machine guns, and other small arms in order to diagnose and locate mechanical deficiencies and malfunctions.
  • Perform operational checks of repaired weapons, using the appropriate gauges, blank and used ammunition, bore scopes and maintaining and servicing paying attention to operation ability and safe condition, and test fires weapons.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) SMALL ARMS REPAIRER ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to read specifications and blueprints to assemble weapons and locate the cause of improper functioning; conduct simulated operation or test firing; use simple machine tools to alter parts; and disassemble, repair, and replace components on small arms. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Must independently lift and carry all small arms weapons often weighing from 15 to 50 pounds. Small arms weighing more than 50 pounds will be lifted and handled by two people or with a lifting device.
  • Working Conditions: Works most of the time inside shop area at individual workbench. Concrete floors normally covered with rubber matting at workbench. Weapons are oily and frequently dirty. Incumbent is subject to cuts, scrapes, burns, bruises, shocks, mashed fingers and skin irritants. Occasionally, but rarely works at a firing range working from the back of a truck in the heat or cold exposed to the elements and noises of a firing range. Occasionally works on-site in a crowded arms room.
