Duties

Help
  • Operates D5, D-6, D-7 and D-8 type bulldozers, front end loaders, bucket crawlers and excavators to unload, place, move, and breakup shore pipe and move or level off sand and other dredged material.
  • Performs preventive maintenance such as checking oil and water, battery, gauges, and condition of tracks. Oils and greases machinery and performs routine operating maintenance duties.
  • Inspects and documents all equipment assigned. Notifies supervisor of mechanical failures and recommending repairs required.
  • Operates powered hoists, capstans, winches and outboard motors on the dredge and attendant plant.
  • Handles and fastens mooring lines and towing cables for making up and breaking of tows; securing attendant pieces of plant; mooring barges.
  • When assigned to a hydraulic dredge, connects, disconnects, repairs and replaces pipeline and shifting pontoons.
  • Removes obstructions from suction head and pipeline. Straightens and replaces walkways and lines on pontoons.
  • When dredging is completed, using wrenches, power tools and other hand tools to dismantle pipeline and loads on barges.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a seasonal position. Seasonal employment means annually recurring periods of work that typically last eight months each year but may vary depending upon the needs of management.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis. This position works on a 7 on and 7 off schedule.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • Incumbent must have successfully completed the USACE Heavy Equipment Operating course within 1 month of starting.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete the USACE Small Boat Safety Course within 6 months of starting.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications: Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties which include: general equipment operation of all sizes of bulldozers, excavators, crawler type machines, front-end type loaders, outboard motors, power hoists, capstans and winches. Making minor repairs to equipment and performing preventive maintenance such as checking all oils and fluids, air filters, batteries, monitoring gauges, and monitoring track condition and tension.

  • Physical Effort: The operator is frequently required to sit in one position for extended periods of time causing strain and fatigue. Moderate physical effort is required to operate the various control mechanisms.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed in all types of weather, in an open operator's seat, on hills, slopes, marshes, rolling and flat terrain. Operator is subject to insect bites when working in marshy areas. The possibility of injury exists in the event that the equipment overturns and the operator is continually exposed to dusty, dirty and noisy working conditions.
