The Engineering Laboratory promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology for engineered systems in ways that enhance economic security and improve quality of life.
We're looking for a Industrial Hygienist to join our team!
If selected, you will provide technical safety and health expertise and coordinate the implementation and continuous improvement of overall health, safety, and environment (HSE) management in the OU. In partnership with the NIST Office of Safety, Health, and Environment (OSHE), Division Safety Representatives, OU line managers and staff, and counterparts in other NIST organizations, support OU management and staff by identifying and addressing hazards and HSE concerns and issues, providing HSE guidance and expert advice to OU personnel in areas including, but not limited to, construction, structural testing, disaster response, field exercises, fire research, material handling (cranes/rigging), powered industrial trucks, welding, chemicals, robotics, and manufacturing. Ensure that the OU is compliant with HSE programs and directives defined by NIST OSHE, OSHA, EPA and other applicable Federal regulations. In coordination with OU Leadership, contribute to development of safety metrics for the OU, track safety metrics, and help shape OU HSE policy and goals based on metrics. Assist with assessing and improving the OU safety culture. Monitor and contribute to safety inspections, assessments, and incident investigations to address specific safety concerns.

Basic Requirements:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science.
OR
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene.
NOTE: Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.
In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12 level (ZP-III for NIST employees) in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience in assessing and addressing workplace environmental conditions causing health issues and demonstrating expertise in industrial hygiene principles or closely related sciences. Experience must demonstrate acquiring and analyzing exposure data for chemical, physical, and biological stresses, predicting health impacts, and recommending control measures such as management, engineering controls, training, and personal protective equipment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
