Duties

Help

The Engineering Technician provides technical assistance, monitors project installation, renovation, construction for the Unit.  The Engineering Technician will also provide space survey and customer project services.

In this position, you will:

  • Review documents, technical plans, and project specifications produced by the Smithsonian’s outside architectural/engineering firms to ensure that the Unit’s needs are met.
  • Assist in coordinating and monitoring work on assigned projects performed in the gardens.
  • Assist in preparation of written reports, especially on decisions that must be approved by the Unit leadership.
  • Assist in ensuring that contractor work is accomplished with the least amount of disruption to ongoing Unit activities.
  • Perform duties as the Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative (COTR) for various garden-related projects.

Qualifications

GS:9: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position specialized experience is defined as working in general construction trade (building or removing structures); performing site work such as surveying, excavating and drainage, site utilities and paving; installing landscape projects; and reviewing project submittals. Experience must also include installing, maintaining stormwater or irrigation systems; and grading or amending soils to prepare sites for construction or landscape improvements.

Or Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B., or J.D. related to the position.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications. For a full explanation of this option please see the Qualification Standards. Or Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M., related to the position.

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job-related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job-related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements but does not satisfy most of the job-related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three" but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
