Duties

Help

As a MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR, you will:

  • Operate motor vehicles to transport passengers and pickup/deliver filing equipment, furniture, supplies, and archival loan materials.
  • Act as couriers and messengers to pick up and or deliver packages and archival loans between National Archives locations and other Federal agencies inside and outside the Washington, DC area.
  • Participate in the loading and unloading of cargo from vehicles using various types of equipment that includes hydraulic equipment.
  • Ensure that cargo doors are properly secured prior to transit.
  • Assist in the transfer of textual and non-textual materials from agency depositories; removing and or installing steel filing equipment; moving or otherwise transporting office furniture, supplies and equipment.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. Physical Requirement: The first part of the interview process for this position requires candidates to pass a physical abilities test designed to measure candidates' ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. The test requires a driver to lift filing equipment, furniture, computer equipment, cartons, and containers weighing from 25 to 50 pounds, and to move pallets or wheeled transport devices loaded with archival materials, supplies, etc. weighing; up to 1500 pounds. They are required to bend, turn, twist, and stoop in order to wrap pallets and secure cargo in cargo trailers.

Working Conditions: Work is performed outside and within the National Archives leased and owned buildings, other Government facilities, in warehouse environments, in the enclosed cab of a truck or other vehicle, inside truck trailers, and sometimes in dimly lit areas as well as close quarters. The driver operates vehicles in a variety of traffic situations and weather conditions.

Driver's License: Must possess and maintain valid state driver's license, Class A or Class, Commercial driver's license (CDL).
