Duties

Help
  • Supervises a group of civilian police officers from grades GS-0083-06 and up to GS-0083-08 at the JSMC-Lima police department.
  • Plans the work of subordinate employees, sets and adjusts short-term priorities, and prepares work schedules.
  • Evaluates work performance of subordinates and makes provision for training or personnel to ensure effective performance of duties.
  • Patrols assigned area of the installation, which includes main post, medical facilities, training, industrial areas, entry gate points, and isolated range areas.
  • Investigates misdemeanor crimes such as stolen property, trespass, illegal dumping, shoplifting, abandoned vehicles and security violations, etc.
  • Monitors vehicle drivers for evidence of unsafe practices or acts.
  • Prepares equipment for duty, checks out motor vehicle and weapons, and ensures operator maintenance is performed on issued equipment prior to turn-in.
  • Provides logistical support to law enforcement agency

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not eligible for this position.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Wearing of protective equipment, e.g., respirators, safety glasses, etc.
  • Incumbent must submit to and pass "random" drug tests.
  • Must complete and pass the U.S. Army Civilian Police Academy.
  • Must qualify with assigned duty weapon within 60 days of assuming police officer duties and qualify bi-annually thereafter.
  • Must be capable of operating a motor vehicle and maintaining a state driver's license.
  • Incumbent must meet the physical requirements of the position, including the ability to lift objects weighing more than 45 pounds.
  • In addition, the employee must maintain certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Must be willing to work alternating shifts.
  • Must pass a Physical Ability Test within 90-days of employment and annually thereafter
  • Uniform is required.
  • May be required to report for duty during periods of inclement weather.
  • Occasional TDY may be required.
  • This position is designated as Key/Emergency Essential.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Providing guidance and support in law enforcement and related administrative operations; (2) Performing law enforcement duties, such as responding to and/or investigating emergency calls, complaints and/or other calls for service; and (3) Leading or supervising employees in the area of security or law enforcement. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
