Summary

This position is located in the Boiler Plant Unit, Operations Section, Facilities Management Services of Edward Hines, Jr. Veteran's Hospital, Hines, IL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervision to the five Boiler Plant Operators and provide continuous operation and maintenance of the facility's four high pressure steam boilers.

Duties

The Boiler Plan Operator Supervisor plans, directs and supervises the work of five Boiler Plant operators engaged in the operation and maintenance of four natural gas/No. 2 fuel oil fired 50,000 pound per hour water tube high pressure steam boilers and related auxiliary equipment; a domestic water pumping and storage system; a heat extractor system; and a diesel driven electric generator set. Additionally, the incumbent is frequently required to operate and maintain the boilers .and all of the other indicated equipment and systems by himself during entire shifts.

  • Communication and interpersonal relations, including the ability to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers.
  • Maintenance of confidentiality of patient/employee information, electronic and print: The medical center performance improvement program.
  • How to work and function in the medical center in a safe manner, including infection control and the correct operation of equipment.
  • (As required) Age/Population-specific care as identified in the Age/Population-Specific Competencies - including knowledge of principles of growth and development relevant to the ages/populations served and associated age/population-specific needs and provide the appropriate care based upon the age/population-related factors noted.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to lift heavy objects, climb stairs, climb ladders and work from catwalks and scaffolds, The incumbent is frequently required to perform duties which involve bending, stretching, reaching and kneeling.
Working Conditions: Frequently exposed to the dangers associated with high pressure steam. The incumbent must be able to regularly work for prolonged periods in temperatures well in excess of 100°F.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
