Duties

Help
  • Perform Field Level Maintenance on heavy vehicles and equipment such as bulldozers, road graders, and similar heavy construction vehicles; front-end loaders, backhoes; mobile cranes; heavy combat equipment; and heavy special purpose vehicles
  • Trace and locate defects and causes of mechanical problems to determine type and extent of necessary repairs on complex hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical utility systems and controls.
  • Repair, overhaul, rebuild major systems such as diesel, gasoline, and other types of internal combustion engines, transmissions, drive line systems and hydraulic systems.
  • Operate a variety of government vehicles, including light trucks and a variety of other vehicles commodities in the performance of duties.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. Must possess and maintain an appropriate valid civilian and military driver's license.
  • Incumbent will have to pass a pre-employment physical examination to meet the physical effort requirements of this position. An annual physical or medical surveillance examination will be required.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I am able to; 1) perform repair work on a variety of heavy mobile and track equipment that can be accomplished by cleaning, repairing, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems; 2) inspect and troubleshoot equipment using test equipment such as, battery and coolant testers, multimeters, Maintenance Support Devices (MSD), accumulator charging devices, and pressure gauges; 3) determine parts required by review of technical and supply manuals to determine proper part number and/or national stock number; and 4) complete service and work orders documenting repairs made, parts used and work-time spent utilizing Automated Supply/Maintenance Management Systems such as Global Combat Support System-Army (GCSS-Army).

  • Physical Effort: Performs work which involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing and arm movement. Sometimes works in awkward positions or cramped areas. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to about 40 pounds and lifts heavier items using jacks, hoists or helpers.
  • Working Conditions: Works inside or outside. Is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperature and loud noise. Outside work may be in bad weather. Frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes and hard, damp floors or surfaces. Works on parts and systems which are dirty and greasy, and which may be dangerous to operate or repair because of defects. Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, because of defects. Frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains and electrical shock. Exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids and lubricants. To reduce the dangers and irritations from above conditions, may be required to wear equipment such as protective eye-glasses, ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, gloves and clothing which may be uncomfortable.
