If selected for this position as a GS-0083-13 Supervisory Police Officer (Major) your duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • As a Supervisory Police Officer (Major), the incumbent serves as a Federal Law Enforcement officer on a federal enclave, which requires knowledge and application of executive police management methods and techniques.
  • Primary responsibility is the management, planning, performance and supervision of the law enforcement personnel, activities, and security within the DP's jurisdiction, Police Operations Branch. The incumbent strives to achieve the greatest operating efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Supervises the subordinated rank of captain and below, and develops, and implements corrective procedures to alleviate identified physical security problems, taking into consideration all internal and external factors when making decisions or recommendations concerning law enforcement to the Chief of Police through the chain of command.
  • Manages investigations using all the available resources.
  • Designated as an essential employee and is always subject to call in the events of an emergency or other condition so justifying.
  • Serves as supervisor over the staff of the assigned Branch. Exercises the full range of supervisory and managerial authority to establish and implement annual and multi-year goals, objectives, and work plans, including organizational continuous improvement and innovation projects, and achieving the greatest operating efficiency and effectiveness and quality assurance.

  • If selected, you will be required to obtain and maintain a TOP Secret Security Clearance.
  • If selected, you may be required to use protective clothing. If selected, you will be required to wear a uniform.
  • If selected, Criminal history background checks are a required for this position.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended, which prohibits access to firearms by people convicted of crimes involving domestic violence or any felonious act.
  • You must have reached your 21st birthday prior to an initial Federal Police Officer appointment.
  • If selected for this position, you may be expected to travel 12 weeks for initial entrance level training at Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). FLETC may be waived for eligible candidates.
  • If selected for this position, you may be required to pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) test as determine by the Chief of Police which consist of a Sit and Reach, Bench Press, and an Agility run.
  • If selected, you will be required to obtain and maintain a CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move heavy items weighing a minimum of 50 lbs. If selected, you will be required to work outdoors under all weather conditions.
  • If selected, you must complete the EEOC, NIH Level 1 and II COR certification and other training, as required by NIH and/or the Chief of Police.
  • This is a testing designated position. Incumbent must submit to and successfully pass a urinalysis drug screening prior to appointment.
  • The incumbent will also be subject to unannounced random drug testing for the duration of their time in this position.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirement:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:

1) managing a police force in providing protection, law enforcement, and crime prevention programs
2) managing police investigations
3) coordinating law enforcement activities with other Federal, state, or local law enforcement agencies
AND 4) managing and supervising, a civilian police force.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.
