Perform oversight for EPA-Cincinnati campus, ensuring personnel working at all facilities are following appropriate health and safety guidelines and are operating under approved health and safety plans, with appropriate licensing.
Serve as a technical expert and advisor for building & laboratory safety, fire & life safety, accessibility, indoor air quality and ergonomic issues analyzing and resolving diverse and potentially high safety risk hazards.
Performs mishap investigations to determine causes and effect on Government personnel and property.
Develop operational and program plans to operational problems or catastrophes, injuries, worker complaints; priorities relating to special legislation or changing requirements for agency programs in safety and occupational health; and emerging safety and occupational health problems or trends.
When entering a Federal job at a grade level lower than the highest promotion potential level, you may be promoted to more complex duties and work more independently, as your career progresses. NOTE: Career ladder promotions are not automatic, and all eligibility and qualifications requirements must be met in order to progress to the next grade level.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below:
To qualify for the GS-11 level, you must have one of the following:
1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level defined as assisting in developing safety plans, policies, standards and/or training materials; implementing changes to an industrial hygiene program.
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree; or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; the education must be directly related and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position
equivalent combination of education and experience
To qualify for the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level defined as conducting occupational, environmental, and industrial hygiene hazard and risk assessments; and advising a variety of internal and external staff on policies, regulations, and processes related to occupational health and hazards and industrial hygiene.

Knowledge of a wide variety of hazardous and complex operations and conditions found in research laboratories

You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related sciences; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). NOTE: Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
