Help
  • Lead others in work involving the handling and fastening of lines to moor plant and make tows.
  • Keep vessel's gear and rigging in good working order.
  • Adhere to maintenance requirements and general upkeep for the deck machinery and equipment.
  • Follow manufacturer's manuals for maintenance and assembly of equipment and tools.
  • Assign deck assignments to other Deckhands with minimal instructions and supervision.

Qualifications

Schedule: During the season, all Motor Vessel Mississippi crew members, including this position, work a 15 days on/6 days off schedule, with the work period beginning and ending on Wednesdays. On the 15 workdays, employees remain on the Motor Vessel Mississippi and are provided meals and lodging. This position works a 6 hour on & 6 hour off shift and may rotate between day and night shifts. During the non-season, the crew works day shift only, with the vessel based at Ensley Engineer Yard, Memphis, TN, on either a 5-day/8-hour or 4-day/10-hr schedule. During the season, the vessel will work in widespread locations in the Mississippi River.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to Lead as a(n) Deckhand Leader. Applicants should document the ability to perform common duties of a Deckhand Leader to include; explaining and demonstrating deckhand tasks, enforcing safety and housekeeping rules and regulations, and distributing tools and materials associated with deckhand duties to workers.
- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Substantial physical effort is required in the handling of heavy cables, equipment and machinery. May lift up to 50 pounds or more. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and walking.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside under all weather conditions. Subject to failing overboard and hazards attending moving plant. Subject to splashing and slippery decks. Uses hand tools characteristic of indicated duties.
