Duties

Help

  • Evaluates commercial loan requests which might contain limited information and investigates essential application characteristics to determine if the applicant business is eligible for the 7(a)/504 program (e.g., is the loan properly structured; meets collateral and other requirements; and includes all necessary conditions).
  • Assesses managements' experience and past performance to determine the potential for successful operation of the business.
  • Prepares reports on the merits of applicants' commercial loan request, addressing eligibility and overall credit quality.
  • Investigates essential commercial credit factors to determine the merits of granting the loan with the assurance of repayment.
  • Makes recommendations to approve or decline commercial loan requests.
  • If approval is recommended, structures loan terms and conditions suitable to protect the interests of the Government and prepares a Loan Authorization.
  • Explains Small Business Administration's commercial loan programs and associated credit risk factors to lenders.
  • Discusses commercial loan eligibility, loan structure, and credit factors with lenders and lending partners.

Qualifications

GS-9: One year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the federal service (obtained in either the private or public sector) performing the following: explains commercial loan programs (e.g., SBA 7(a)/504 loan programs or lending institutions loan programs) and associated credit risk factors to lenders and lending partners; AND analyzes less complex commercial loan applications (e.g., SBA 7(a)/504 loan programs or lending institutions loan programs) for program eligibility and creditworthiness.

Loan Specialist Series GS-1165

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

All qualification requirements must be met by 11:59 pm (Eastern Time) on 06/17/2024.

Education

If you do not meet the specialized experience requirements, you may also qualify with education. You MUST submit transcripts (official or unofficial) with this application if you wish to qualify based on education.

GS-9: Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in the following fields: finance, accounting, banking and credit, or other related coursework; OR LL.B or J.D. if related. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcript(s) if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education).

OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An equivalent combination of the above education and experience. For example, six months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirements) and 27 semester hours or 41 quarter hours of graduate education as described above (50% of the education requirement, in excess of the first year of graduate school). (You MUST submit a copy of your transcript(s) if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education).
