Duties

Help

The incumbent will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic Leader. As a Maintenance Mechanic Leader, you will perform the following duties:

  • Plans, schedules, and performs projects in multiple trade areas both in town and at a remote locations without road access.
  • Remote location work including the movement of heavy equipment and supplies by barge and landing craft.
  • Journey-level operation of heavy equipment for site preparation and site improvements at all of the facilities. Equipment includes: Wheel loaders, skid-steer loaders, forklifts, excavators, and compactors.
  • Interpret and apply building plans and blueprints; and, skill in the use of tools and equipment common to the trade.
  • Pass on to other workers the instruction received from the supervisor and getting work started, e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individuals; work along with other workers and setting the pace; see to it that needed tools and materials are available.
  • Maintaining a current knowledge and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.

Conditions of Employment:

Physical Effort: The work requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally exceed 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area maybe dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4700 General Maintenance and Operations Work Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Federal Wage System (FWS) positions require the use of a Screen-Out Element (SOE). Points awarded for this element will range from 0-4, with 4 being the highest. Points will be based on experience and training which are documented by your responses to the questionnaire. All applicants must receive a score of 2.0 or above on the SOE and an average of 2.0 on all the job elements in order to be considered minimally qualified for the position(s) to be filled.

  2. A copy of your SF-50 "Notification of Personnel Action" documenting your RIF separation, noting your positions, grade level, and duty location, and/or Agency certification of inability to place you through RPL, etc;
  3. A copy of your latest performance appraisal including your rating; and
  4. Any documentation from your agency that shows your current promotion potential.
