  • Serves as Assistant Chief Engineer on a self-propelled, sea-going, diesel powered, hopper dredge engaged in continuous 24 hours per day/7 days per week dredging activities.
  • As the Assistant Chief Engineer, serves as senior watch stander and relieves superior of the necessity of immediately directing engine room activities during days when tours overlap.
  • Supervises and directs the activities of 18-20 subordinate licensed and unlicensed employees engaged in the servicing, operation, maintenance, and repair of all engines, machinery, systems, and auxiliary equipment assigned to the Engine Department.
  • Plans, schedules, lays-out, and directs both the long-term and day-to-day activities of subordinates
  • Establishes and posts watch schedules, keeps records of employee's work hours, requests any necessary overtime, and certifies work hours for payroll
  • Responsible for the maintenance of employee morale and discipline
  • In the absence of the Chief Engineer, assumes responsibility for the continued management and direction of the Engine Department.
  • Serves as the technical expert and advisor to the Master and the District staff on matters pertaining to the on-site operation, maintenance, and repair of engine room machinery and related equipment On the dredge
  • When Chief Engineer is aboard, serves as senior watch stander and "Second in command" of the Engine Department.
  • Is the primary point of contact for subordinate watch standers to report problems or request technical guidance or decision

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Merchant Mariner Credential endorsed as Chief Engineer of Motor Propelled Vessels, any Horsepower.
  • Incumbent is on call 24 hours a day.
  • Scheduled tour of duty will require evenings, weekends and holiday work hours.
  • Must be willing to take and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and must be willing and able to pass random drug and alcohol tests thereafter.
  • Position requires taking and passing a pre-employment physical and then annually thereafter.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Assistant Chief Engineer (Diesel) without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate that you have the ability to perform duties such as direct a team of employees in the operations of the engine department, and/or independently perform complex repairs to engine room equipment, and/or read gauges and instruments during continuous operations and stand regular watch. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

???????Information about working aboard the Dredge McFarland:
  • Regular tour of duty is 15 consecutive workdays, followed by 13 days off.
  • Residence on board the dredge during the work period is a necessary condition of employment.
  • While the dredge is operating, subsistence and quarters are provided free of charge.
  • Transportation to and from the dredge is at the employee's expense.
  • The Dredge McFARLAND is in a ready reserve status and operates on the Delaware River 70 days per year. The remainder of the year is spent on performing maintenance or periods at the Shipyard. The Ship may also be called out to perform emergency dredging along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts and be able to respond within 72 hours to get underway.
