Duties

Help
  • You will serve as Laboratory Certifying Official (LCO) and apply technical expertise and expertise to ensure all laboratory results are forensically and scientifically supportable.
  • You will review testing documentation to ensure all specimens are properly handled throughout the testing process.
  • You will evaluate testing results and determine acceptability of samples based on immunoassay, chromatography and/or mass spectra.
  • You will review testing documentation to ensure all testing discrepancies are properly documented.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain laboratory technical certification in accordance with the timeframe specified in the LOPs.

Qualifications

POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: This position has a Positive Education Requirement. In order to verify that you meet the positive education qualifications for this position, you MUST submit a complete copy of your transcripts. In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Specialized Experience:

  • Utilizing record keeping, proficiency testing and methods development necessary to assure acceptable quality control of laboratory analysis.
  • Analyzing industrial hygiene samples by utilizing wet laboratory procedures and/or more sophisticated analysis using advanced instrumentation including gas liquid chromatography, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, gas chromatograph mass spectrophotometer and/or microscopy.
  • Reviewing background information submitted with the samples.
  • Studying the chemistry of any known substances to be identified.

Education

ALL Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess Basic Requirements:

  • Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. MUST submit transcripts w/application. FAILURE TO SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. MUST submit transcripts w/application. FAILURE TO SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position:

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION of a Two "2" full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's degree or Master's or equivalent graduate degree. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work - must be related to the position. TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH RESUME TO QUALIFY.
