Duties

Help
  • Audit retrospectively for accuracy of diagnosis, evaluation and management, procedure codes and documentation.
  • Perform encounter audits, which will be the primary monitoring tool used to identify operational and regulatory issues, to monitor performance and ensure lasting improvement.
  • Prepare reports of findings and recommends staff education and training on accurate coding practices and compliance issues.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes and surgical techniques through participation in continuing education programs.
  • Develop programs and plans for orienting and training medical and ancillary services staff in basic coding techniques and requirements.
  • Train individual providers and make suggestions for documentation improvements.
  • Maintain rosters for one-on-one and/or group training sessions.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes analyze the patient medical records to identify inaccurately coded services in accordance with federal coding regulations and guidelines and prepare and/or perform medical facility auditing analysis. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).



Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • AAPC Certification or AHIMA Certification is highly desired.
  • At least one-year medical coding experience in outpatient and inpatient setting is highly desired.
