Duties

Help
  • As Unit receptionist, greet patients, provide instructions to patients on test preparation, and procedural requirements; arrange appointments; and gather preliminary information for medical records.
  • Conduct records management procedures to assemble patients’ charts, record providers’ orders, enter and retrieve x-rays, laboratory reports and patient data.
  • Use automated and/or manual records system to extract medical information, generate follow-up and/or aftercare instructions, inpatient admissions and discharge and/or transfer information.
  • Prepare reports based on the requirements specified by supervisor or standard procedures, and the intended use of the data or report to respond to data calls.
  • Conduct ancillary duties such as monitoring end-of-day processing for data quality; capturing Inpatient Consults, troubleshooting clinical/user problems within the automated systems and/or providing training on proper use of systems.

  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Required to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Position requires working12-hour shifts: 0545 1800 Day Shift and 1745 to 0600 Night Shift on a Panama shift. (See Additional Information for explanation of a Panama Shift.)
  • The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts that may require special safety precautions; e.g., exposure to contagious diseases.
  • May be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, gloves, or shields.
  • May work in close proximity to mentally disturbed patients, and consequently, there is a possibility of physical abuse.
  • Must participate in the Medical Employee Health Program and will be subject required immunizations and testing pursuant to governing guidance.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) testing is required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes applying clinic procedures for working the front desk, scheduling patient appointments, maintaining patient medical records, referring patients to other clinics, and providing information to patients and staff. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Health Services Administration, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Health Information Technology, Business Administration, Communication, Business Management, Health Information Management

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

  • On a Traditional Panama schedule, employees to work three 12-hour shifts in one week, followed by four 12-hour shifts the following week for a biweekly total of 84 hours. 2 on (M, T), 2 off (W, Th), 3 on (F, S, Sun), 2 off (M, T), 2 on (W, Th), 3 off (F, S, Sun). The team usually shifts from days to nights as the mission requires, but usually a 3-month rotation.
