Help

The incumbent:

  • Serves as a Health Physicist and is responsible for providing radiation protection expertise.
  • Evaluates radiological protection programs to determine whether the program complies with applicable codes, standards, guides, regulations, Orders, and accepted practices.
  • Appraises facilities, procedures, and operations to determine their adequacy to protect the workers and members of the general public from the effects of ionizing radiation.
  • Administers and coordinates radiation protection program(s) for the Department, including independent evaluations and special studies.
  • Provides technical assistance and advice in the area of radiation protection and health physics to other organizations and independent review groups.
  • Reviews Office and/or contractor performance to identify trends indicative of performance or compliance status.
  • Performs technical reviews and provides recommendations on Radiation Protection Program documents (plans, schedules, etc.).
  • Reviews and comments on a wide variety of operating contractor documents.
  • Evaluates, oversees, and provides emergency preparedness and emergency response support related to radiological incidents in conjunction with contractor, Federal, State, and local officials, as required.
  • Develops, reviews and implements radiation control policy, requirements, and guidance.
  • Communicates hazards associated with exposure to ionizing radiation.

EN-1306-03 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower NNSA Demonstration Project pay band or GS grade level in the Federal Service, i.e. EN-00, or GS-11. Specialized experience is defined as assessing contractor program effectiveness and compliance, and to establish methods to anticipate and prevent occupational health disorders or property damage arising from the use of radiological materials.

EN-1306-04 SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education

Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
