Duties

Help

  • Lead the Center for Innovation in Education (CIE) including overseeing mission execution, establishing strategic directions, and nurturing relevant partnerships.
  • This position ensures that CIE services for faculty, staff and students are effective and aligned with the needs of AFIT's schools by organizing and managing the CIE Board of Advisors, engaging with the Chief Academic Officer and school deans, participating in AFIT-level committees and conducting evaluation of CIE programming.
  • Manages the daily operations of the CIE, overseeing staff activities, program development and implementation. Oversees budget planning and financial execution of assigned CIE funds. Develops relevant CIE initiatives to enhance teaching, assessment, communication, research and other skills of faculty, staff and students within the scope of the CIE mission, seeking additional resources as appropriate.
  • Convenes a board of advisors for the CIE with representation from relevant AFIT organizations to maintain awareness of evolving institutional needs related to the CIE mission, establishing meeting schedule and ensuring minutes are recorded. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with schools, directorates, and other personnel with talent development responsibilities.
  • Promotes CIE services and development opportunities for faculty, staff and students through intranet, email, CIE board of advisors, newsletters, and meetings as available. Cultivates relationships with other teaching and learning excellence organizations within the Department of the Air Force, Department of Defense, other federal organizations, and non-federal academic institutions to share best practices, learning opportunities and develop initiatives.
  • Develops, plans, and promotes quality programming for staff and faculty development by designing training, educational programs and workshops to meet the needs of AFIT personnel. Ensures programming in areas of educational methods, writing and communication skills, educational foundations, innovative pedagogy, interpersonal relations and other areas meet identified needs. Establish and maintain network of contacts to facilitate training and educational goals of the CIE.
  • Teaches classes, delivers workshops, and conducts briefings in areas of expertise. Supports new faculty orientation programs in coordination with AFIT school deans. Oversees development and maintenance of CIE SharePoint and other resources for faculty, staff and student use. Serves as a mentor to faculty seeking professional development guidance and directing personnel to other resources as appropriate. Provides advice and counsel to the Chief Academic Officer regarding best practices and recommendations for improving AFIT's educational outcomes.
  • Researches best practices and pursues continuous improvement of CIE services and programming for the AFIT community. Attends relevant training and conferences to improve knowledge to support effective programming. Identifies new trends and developments in adult learning and higher education instruction and incorporates this information into offerings of the CIE. Identifies, accesses and shares opportunities and resources for development initiatives through creation and maintenance of network of resources. Researches topics for the delivery of training programs at AFIT. Evaluates participant satisfaction through program evaluation.
  • Oversees the dissemination of key research and program evaluation findings to AFIT senior leaders, the CIE board of advisors, and other interested stakeholders. Prepares reports, position papers, and analyses highlighting the CIE accomplishments, opportunities for improvement, and trends in adult learning and higher education instruction. Identifies and participates in professional activities and associations to enhance the CIE development programs.
  • Participates in chartered and ad hoc AFIT committees to achieve desired educational outcomes, including committees focused on academic policies, assessment, diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA); institutional strategy, and accreditation preparations. Represents AFIT on WPAFB, SOCHE, or other external committees relevant to areas of expertise. Supports relevant professional society activities as appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • At the time of the expiration of the initial appointment an employee who adequately demonstrates professional competence can be extended in increments up to 3 years or for an indefinite period.
  • An initial appointment can be allowed to expire for an employee who does not adequately demonstrate professional competence.
  • The appointment cannot be converted to a permanent tenure in the competitive service.
  • This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.

  • Term appointment may be extended to the maximum period allowed by law without further competition. NOTE: Current federal civilian employees may apply for this position and if selected, a break in service of at least 3 days may be required prior to appointment to this position.
  • Incumbent may be required to travel by commercial or military conveyance (or other means of travel) to perform temporary duty.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Additional duties supporting the academic and administrative aspects of a military school can be assigned by school and/or university leaders.

Required Qualifications
  • M.S. degree is required at the time of employment.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters is required.
  • A minimum of three years employment at an accredited college or university, either teaching or managing activities core to teaching and learning.
Desired Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree relevant to the duties of the position or the academic disciplines offered at AFIT.
  • Demonstrated experience applying pedagogical theories, educational technologies, instructional design, and assessment strategies to improve student learning outcomes.
  • Experience using multiple educational technology tools to support teaching and learning in virtual and in-person environments.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing teams to improve a college or university learning environment.
  • Strong networking skills and track record of engagement with various stakeholders internal and external to an institution to build partnerships and collaborative initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a strategic roadmap for teaching and learning initiatives aligned with institutional goals and objectives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively inspire diverse campus constituents to adopt relevant best practices.
  • Active involvement in relevant professional societies
  • Proficiency in financial planning, budget allocation, and fiscal responsibility, ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources in support of organizational objectives.
