About the Position: Maintenance Mechanic will be assigned to the Light Capacity Fleet Unit of the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet, Duty Station: Old Hickory, TN. Performs the duties of a journeyman Maintenance Mechanic which covers the full range of complex maintenance tasks requiring the application of journeyman level skills in a wide variety of trades and crafts. Such as: Machinery Repair, Carpentry, Sandblasting and Painting, Pipefitting, Equipment Operations, and Concrete Maintenance.

  • Modify parts, components, or assemblies in the maintenance and repair of various items of installed, dam operating, or mobile equipment and machinery.
  • Plan work to be done, prepares own sketches or drawings, determines and sets up types of machines, tools, and angles.
  • Disassemble items, remove broken, worn, obsolete, or nonstandard part or component; fabricate, temper, or replace part of component; and fit, align, and reassemble.
  • Work alone or as a member of a work crew and applies full range of carpentry skills and techniques in repairing, constructing, remodeling and maintaining a variety of wooden structures and fixtures.
  • Use a variety of hand and power shop tools in accomplishing assignments.
  • Sandblast and paint large renovated and fabricated steel structures and components.
  • Utilize stationary and portable abrasive blasting equipment to prepare surfaces for finish paint.
  • Install, repair, and maintain high pressure piping systems such as hydraulic and high-pressure air or oil line systems.
  • Determine nature and extent of necessary repairs.
  • Plan and lay out work, utilizing blueprints or layout sketches when provided.
  • Operate aerial work platforms to access work locations.
  • Operate forklift on uneven conditions to unload vehicles and move materials in outside storage yards.
  • Operate overhead crane which requires hand, eye and foot coordination.
  • Perform duties as a rigger and signal person, selecting and inspecting appropriate rigging for the load being moved, and properly signals other crane operators, to safely and effectively move and position loads.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Able to perform the full range of complex maintenance tasks requiring the application of journeyman level skills in machinery repair, carpentry, sandblasting and painting, pipefitting, equipment operations, concrete maintenance and repair. Able to apply a high order of skill to determine reasons for and making corrections to mechanical defects and performance problems. Know and compare the governing safety practices and procedures. Operate heavy equipment to include but not limited to: overhead cranes, skid steers, dump trucks, aerial lifts, and forklifts to safely and accurately maneuver supplies and materials to accomplish repair, replacement or creation of projects.
- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Makes repairs on equipment or in installations often on high or hard to reach areas from ladders or platforms. Is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and operates equipment.
  • Working Conditions: Works outside the majority of time in all types of weather. Is subject to injury by tools, equipment, flying debris, and similar objects. Is exposed to mud, dirt, dust, chemical compounds, high noise levels, burns, and fumes. Is subject to danger of falls and drowning while working on moving equipment and structures over or on water. Works behind bulkheads below water level, characteristically works on or adjacent to water. Occasionally works at heights over 30 feet.
