Duties

Help

Provides engineering assistance to field facilities that are maintaining NAS equipment and restoring NAS services. Performs modification engineering to resolve problems with NAS equipment. Maintains technical documentation used in the maintenance of NAS systems and services. Provides technical assistance to Washington program offices fielding new NAS equipment.

The incumbent performs multiple, varying, and complex assignments and plans the implementation of projects/programs under limited direction of a manager or more experienced engineer. He/she is responsible for national modifications and technical maintenance of hardware and software concerns in communications systems, equipment, and facilities of the National Airspace System.

Applies experience and advanced knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts applicable to his/her discipline to accomplish assignments and to develop plans and techniques to improve programs and policies. Analyze operational, maintenance, and logistical problems to determine functional impact and technical course of action to correct.

The incumbent contributes to the preparation of engineering study reports detailing results of analysis and recommendations. Understands how his/her technical area interacts with or is affected by other disciplines and considers the objectives of the major subdivision and LOB/SO when developing, integrating, and implementing solutions to diverse, complex problems.

Develops hardware and software modifications to correct problems with communications systems. Develop test plans, procedures, and quality control techniques to insure quality of product. Generate directives needed to implement modifications. Resolves all but unique technical problems without the intervention of management or a more experienced engineer. Often develops and recommends techniques to address problem situations.

Reviews and analyzes technical maintenance documentation for communications systems to ensure it is complete, accurate, and adequate. He/she contributes to the development of new documents, or changes to existing ones, to correct discrepancies identified and reflect modifications.

Contacts are internal and external. May act as a key technical point of contact for assigned activities. He/she provides technical information to headquarters program offices in the development of new NAS communications systems. He/she may be called upon to communicate the overall results of a project or work activity to FAA management, the aviation and aerospace industries, and other external parties.

Work is reviewed periodically, typically at major milestones and at completion, for technical compliance and alignment with the requirements of the project or other work activity. Work activities typically support and may be vital to the success of projects or activities of one or more organizational units, subdivisions, and LOB's/SO's. In some areas, the work may affect the safety and security of customers.

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-H, FG/GS 11-12. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Specialized Experience is: Experience collecting and analyzing engineering data; performing engineering testing and recommending modifications to the design or operation of communication systems, equipment, or processes.

Applicants should include examples of specialized experience in their work history.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics

OR

Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
