Duties

As a Senior Program Officer, the Tribal Health Research Strategy Coordinator will be tasked with providing scientific leadership and expert guidance in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of tribal health research funded by NIGMS. Specific duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as the Institute's expert on matters related to tribal health research within the scope of NIGMS, and as a resource for the Director, NIGMS, the Associate Director for Extramural Activities, NIGMS and other senior leadership within the Institute;
  • Serving as a senior-level NIGMS representative in collaborations and initiatives with the NIH Tribal Health Research Office (THRO), the Indian Health Service (IHS), Tribal Nations, Federal and academic partners across the country;
  • Formulating, planning, directing, and evaluating broad NIH-wide or trans-NIGMS program objectives, policies, and activities for a portfolio of tribal health research projects, programs, and other grants/awards including the discovery, development, and evaluation of scientific areas critical for eventual prevention and therapeutic strategies;
  • Advising NIGMS leadership on strategies to address ongoing concerns with tribal communities and to resolve issues of a complex and sensitive nature;
  • Partnering with the NIGMS Division of Data Integration, Modeling and Analytics (DIMA) to prepare responses to Congressional inquiries concerning NIGMS AI/AN research efforts and to urgent inquiries from HHS or other federal agencies, such as the examination of Executive Orders as they apply to tribal governments;
  • Collaborating with the NIGMS Grants Administration Branch (GAB) and other Divisions/Branches to assist grantees navigate and understand requirements and resolve issues related to grants administration within tribes and tribal organizations;
  • Working closely with the Division of Extramural Activities (DEA) and grantee institutions to support audit follow-up responsibilities and manage compliance issues.
Ideal candidates should have experience with tribal health research and managing extramural funds. They should have the ability to formulate ways to improve the research capacity of AI/AN communities. The incumbent will collaborate with the AI/AN tribal community and act as the NIGMS Point of Contact (POC) for the communities in terms of problem-solving, while serving as the focal point for the programmatic and scientific parts of the AI/AN research portfolio.
