The Conservator (Objects) designs, proposes and conducts conservation treatments on a wide variety of inorganic and organic collections objects.
In this position, you will:
Provide expert technical advice and information on object conservation. Work with project teams and review exhibit plans, facility reports and drawings.
Support operations of the conservation laboratory, development of unit-wide guidelines and protocol for the handling, care and storage of collections items, and for their presentation and exhibition. Technically support assistant conservators, contractors, lab assistants, interns, fellows and volunteers. Generate contracts and procurement to support the collection.
Perform and actively participate in safeguarding the collection by developing and implementing IPM; disaster plans; prescribe environmental parameters and perform inspections. Work with collections managers to plan appropriate storage and ensure that the collection is housed safely. Advise curators, technicians, exhibit design and production staff, and others, on the conservation needs of the collections being prepared for exhibition, loan, or storage.
Propose and conduct conservation treatment performing highly complex and delicate techniques on culturally significant, historical, and fine art objects from the collection. Objects worked upon are often extremely valuable and always irreplaceable, thus require unremitting attention to detail.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.
In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:
You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience providing expert technical advice regarding condition and treatment needs; performing conservation treatments on three-dimensional historic objects and works of art in a museum or cultural institution; advising on the best practices for the care, handling, display, storage, and shipment of objects; participating in planning and preparing budgets for lab activities, exhibits and projects.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
