  • You will facilitate objective-based discussions that encourage consolidation of learning and critical reasoning.
  • You will contribute to distinguished visitor engagements with subject matter expertise.
  • You will perform various administrative and institutional duties to support the executive education functions of the Ted Stevens Center for Arctic Security Studies.
  • You will develop, manage, coordinate, conduct, and assess all aspects of engagements, including on-line and in-person courses, workshops, and partnerships.

Qualifications

Seeking Professor with specialty in the following subject areas:

Climatology: The candidate will participate in and contribute to instruction and engaged research to identify climate-related security concerns and needs, possible solutions, and useful and relevant outputs. The ideal candidate is one who thrives in a teaching and research environment focused on the interplay between Arctic climate and weather. Having a strong foundation in understanding the processes that govern climate patterns, such as the cryosphere, atmospheric dynamics, coastal erosion, permafrost, ocean currents, and Arctic bio-diversity will help drive curriculum development and course delivery that includes:

  • Planning and collaboration to enhance Arctic practitioner resilience to address climate impacts on existing (and future) infrastructure.
  • Using pattern and trend analysis to address Department of Defense operational planning in variable climate conditions affecting operational readiness.
  • Leveraging the rapidly developing fields of Data and Systems Science, oriented explicitly to understanding and characterizing Arctic region climate change in support of Department of Defense decision-makers.
  • Describing the impact of climate change on Arctic Defense resources and weather and its effects on political balance and international security cooperation in the Arctic.
  • Defining the ecological, physical, economic, or societal impacts associated with climate change that substantially alter ecosystem integrity, biodiversity, political stability, human security, and/or national security infrastructure.
  • Deepening knowledge on how, when, and why climate-related operational security risks arise, and how these risks can be mitigated to provide the tactical and strategic advantage to U.S. and Allied Arctic security practitioners.
Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree with preference given for a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Environmental Science or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Proven ability teaching and seminar facilitation at the college or university level.
  • Proven experience (3-5 years) developing, delivering, and improving course curriculum. Utilizes course participant assessments and input from faculty, program graduates and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the Arctic and its complexities including history, geography, environment, politics, economics, population, demographics, and culture.
  • General understanding of U.S. national security, national strategy, and international security affairs
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with peers, leadership, and subordinates.

Knowledge, skills & abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with academic and non-academic groups/individuals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Skill in public speaking and presenting information to diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members in-person and over web-conferencing technology.
  • Ability to travel to and participate in regional meetings and small group interviews.
  • Work in a team-oriented, highly dynamic environment and apply expertise in chosen field through professional communication and oral presentation.
  • Experience working in multinational settings at the operational, strategic, or policy level.
  • Experience living or working in the Arctic.
  • Proven ability in teaching and seminar facilitation using a variety of experiential learning techniques (in person and virtually).
  • Ability to conceptualize, design, and prepare lesson plans for others to teach; facilitate seminar dialogue; lecture.
  • Refined oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to function as an effective, collaborative team member.
  • General understanding of Arctic and Climate Security dynamics including the interplay of some or all of history, geography, environment, politics, economics, population, demographics, and culture.
  • Engage in scholarship that advances knowledge in fields of the topics listed above or related topics.
  • Engage in service (internal and external) in support of the center's missions with subject matter expertise related to Arctic regional security inclusive of North America, Trans-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions, military strategy, and the application of military power in support of national security objectives.
  • Knowledge of key public and private factors and networks that can contribute to developing strategies to contend with Arctic security challenges.
  • Coordinate with and provide subject matter expertise to external agencies on behalf of the Ted Stevens Center.
  • Support other academic programs at the Ted Stevens Center, as needed.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in sharing expertise and developing faculty colleagues to improve the organization.
