Duties

Help

  • Operates farm-type tractors with towed or attached equipment on rough, uneven, and sloped terrain.
  • Operates one or more types of gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction.
  • Clears sloped banks along waterways, roadways, floodways, and levees.
  • Excavates, backfills, and levels earth to rough specifications.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on various equipment to ensure safe and serviceable condition.
  • Performs maintenance work such as basic painting, basic electrical work, basic carpentry and repairs concrete surfaces.

  • You must possess and maintain, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) that a U.S. State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory has issued to operate various vehicles and equipment of both automatic and manual transmissions.
  • You must obtain and maintain, within 6 months of the date of appointment, a hazardous material (HAZ-MAT) endorsement on your Commercial Driver License (CDL), that is issued by a U.S. State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.
  • You must obtain and maintain, within 6 months of the date of appointment, a Tanker endorsement on your Commercial Driver License (CDL), that is issued by a U.S. State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.

Qualifications for first consideration must be met by May 20, 2024

Minimum Qualification Requirement - To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required, however your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator (Open Until Filled) without more than normal supervision.

Examples of experience include: operating farm-type tractors with towed or attached equipment (i.e., 20-foot bat winged mower, slope mower, gator pump, etc.) on rough, uneven, and sloped terrain; operating gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler type traction (e.g. crawler tractor, graders, front-end loader, backhoe, trench digger, bulldozer, etc.); operating gasoline or diesel-powered motor vehicles (e.g. dump truck, water truck, tractor/trailer) with a gross vehicle weight of over 32,000 pounds; operating heavy equipment transport trucks and lowboy trailer combinations; applying knowledge of vehicle overhead and side clearances, turning radius, and breaking distance; loading, arranging, and securing cargo onto trailers; painting metal structures, equipment, and various types of surfaces; mixing, pouring, spreading, and leveling cement; replacing wall switches, light fixtures, and outlets; using basic tools such as wrenches, sockets, pliers, and/or screwdrivers to perform maintenance tasks on vehicles and equipment.

Physical Effort
Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 44 lbs. Heavier items are lifted with the assistance of others or by using equipment, such as carts, hand trucks, dollies, etc. Maintenance related work requires walking, standing, bending, climbing onto ladders, platforms, and scaffolds, and large equipment. Works in cramped or hard-to-reach places. The work requires frequent reaching, stooping, bending, and moving of arms and legs in order to operate tractor controls and to make couplings between the equipment, attachments and large equipment; reaching above shoulders; engaging in rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously to operate multiple vehicle controls; using near and far vision (correctable) and depth perception to read instructions, monitor gauges, and operate mobile equipment; hearing (aid permitted) to monitor equipment operation and voice communication. Strain may be caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces.

Working Conditions
Follows established safety procedures and practices to avoid injury and hazards in the work area. Use of protective clothing and safety gear, safety vest, safety shoes, goggles, face shield, hearing protection, and gloves. Works indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, dirt, dust, grease, solvents, paint fumes, noise, heights, slippery surfaces, and open waterways. Working in environmental conditions that may expose the incumbent to tetanus, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, Hepatitis Type A and Hepatitis Type B. Subject to abrasions, cuts, bruises, strains, fractures, insect bites, and other injuries. Exposed to the possibility of falling from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms. The occasional use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or face- fitted respirator may be required following a medical examination to determine any limitations.
