The incumbent functions as a Fire Protection Inspector at the James A. Haley VA Hospital and all corresponding outpatient clinics. The position is located at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital and Clinics. The James A. Haley VA Medical Center is a tertiary hospital and is one of the busiest and most complex healthcare systems in the nation with over 4,500 paid employees. It includes numerous outpatient clinics dispersed over four counties in Central Florida.

Major Duties:

  • Performs fire prevention inspection of a wide variety of operations, requiring special adaptation of standard fire prevention practices and procedures to meet local requirements.
  • Inspects buildings, petroleum storage, laboratories/research activities, paint storage, hazardous materials storage, warehouses, construction and renovation areas and other facilities in areas of high and low fire expectancy in an effort to eliminate fire hazards.
  • Coordinates deficiencies/recommendations with facility industrial hygienists and safety specialists.
  • Conducts specialized fire prevention lectures and demonstrations for staff on an ongoing basis.
  • Uses tact and firmness in dealing with all levels of management in gaining acceptance of sound fire prevention practices.
  • Conducts follow-up visits to ensure deficiencies are corrected and inspects new construction and renovations for inclusion of fire prevention materials and equipment.
  • Reviews, updates, and maintains hospital life safety drawings to ensure that building life safety features are accurately designated on the drawings.
  • Reviews testing and inspection reports of fire alarm systems and advises supervisor of any deficiencies.
  • Provides fire and safety training using a wide variety of materials, publications, exhibits, and visual aids promotes fire safety and fire prevention through oral presentations.
  • Performs all duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This position includes Selective Placement Factors (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration.

The Selective Placement Factors for this position is: possess a current and valid Fire Inspector certification in accordance with NFPA 1031. (A copy of your certification must be submitted at the time of application, or you will be rated ineligible)

The Selective Placement Factors for this position is: possess a current and valid State motor vehicle operator's license of the appropriate classification or kind and provide information on my driving record upon requested. (Do NOT include a copy of your license with your application package).

Minimum Qualification Requirement
For GS-7:
Possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience to perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been gained to at least the equivalent of the next lower grade level of (GS-6) in Federal service. Specialized experience that demonstrated the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Such duties may include (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The performance of duties requires long periods of walking, standing, bending, and kneeling. Moderate lifting and carrying of equipment up to 30lbs. Use of all appendages, good vision and hearing are necessary. Emotional and mental stability are required. Occasional periods of physical exertion are required during fire alarms, patient evacuation or other emergencies that may occur as is reported. Inspection work requires frequent visitations to areas that are cramped, noisy, or where temperature extremes or inclement weather conditions exist. Since areas are sometimes under construction, or not easily accessible; incumbent should have fair degree of coordination to prevent injuring self.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
