The Nanoscale Device Characterization Division (NDCD) transforms nano- and atom-scale technologies by advancing measurement science and fundamental knowledge. The Division's mission is to develop and advance the measurement and knowledge infrastructure to characterize nano- and atom-scale engineered materials and solid-state devices for innovation in information processing, sensing, and future quantum technologies!

As the new Physicist on our team you will:

  • Conduct optical spectroscopy experiments of single photon emitters and means to control emission to study the physics and control of nano-and micro-scale deterministic systems using a combination of tools including optical and magnetic spectroscopies, advanced microscopies and simulations.
  • Investigate multiple characteristic processes such as optically active solid-state spin defects across a range of materials like diamond, silicon carbide, silicon, boron nitride, GaN, and others.
  • Develop high resolution and time resolved spectral characterization of NV-diamond centers and other artificial atoms systems.
  • Advance time-resolved spectroscopy, physics of magnetism, magnetization dynamics, ferromagnetic resonance, spin wave creation and propagation, nanomagnetics, diamond NV-center magnetometry, microwave instrumentation.
  • Disseminate research results through open literature publication and technical talks at conferences and participate in internal, industrial, or university collaborations to increase impact of research results.

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirements

Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

OR

2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized experience is defined as experience working in is characterizing and validating the properties of optically active solid-state spin defects across a range of materials like diamond, silicon carbide, silicon, boron nitride, GaN, and others. Applicant should ALSO have at least one year of specialized experience designing advanced optical, magnetic, and electrical data acquisition methods including time-resolved optical spectroscopy, cryogenic optical methods, microscopic and microwave techniques, electric field modulation and heterodyne techniques, and simulation, data processing and analysis.

OR

Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.

The qualification requirements in this vacancy announcement are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook.
