Duties

Help

  • Plans, develops, coordinates, and conducts a variety of mountain based classes and trips in support of a diverse Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP).
  • Within overall plans developed by higher levels, selects activities and services to be offered in addition to required basic programs.
  • Instructs and guides avalanche education, backcountry skiing, rock climbing and other high level technical mountain programs.
  • Leads assigned flex guides/instructors on programs and provides industry standard training to lower level staff on an ongoing basis. In charge of overall risk management for in field programs.
  • Schedules, various classes, trips, and other activities specifically targeting high-risk adventure programs.
  • Ensures compliance with state and local agencies and their regulatory requirements. Accounts for all funds involved in the program and makes recommendations.
  • Develops and implements procedures to monitor, track and document program effectiveness and success.
  • Reports progress and makes recommendations on program planning, coordination and follow-up procedures to the Outdoor Recreation Director (ORD).
  • Utilizes various software programs in researching, networking, exchanging information and establishing historical files.
  • Resolves customer issues and complaints.
  • Monitors and tracks complaints to evaluate and then ensure quality service and client satisfaction.
  • Assists the ORD in the planning, developing, and conducting an outdoor recreation training program, as well as a risk management plan.
  • Monitors the condition and inventory of OAP equipment and supplies used to support the program.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on OAP equipment and assists in repairing and maintaining recreation equipment assigned to Outdoor Recreation.
  • Assigns, directs, and reviews the work of assigned employees and volunteers.
  • Recruits, organizes, and trains part-time or flex guides, volunteer leaders, and program coordinators.
  • Assigns work, explains work requirements, methods and procedures to ensure proper accomplishment of assigned activities.
  • Evaluates work performances of OAP volunteers and flex guides.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Qualifying Experience:
  • Must have extensive knowledge of the concepts, principles, and techniques of a broad range of outdoor recreation programs, which would have been gained in a position at a guide service, educational institution, or comparable business.
  • Must have documented experience in the outdoor recreation field with minimum training and certification levels of AMGA Ski Guide Course Completion, AIARE Course Leader and AAA Accredited Pro 2/Level 3 OR AMGA SPI Provider, WFR and CPR certs.
  • Preferred AMGA Certified Rock, Alpine, or Ski Guide or IFMGA Licensed Guide.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations as they apply to land use and permitting.
  • Strong organization and planning skills required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to motivate, train, and work effectively with coworkers and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of and experience with an unusually large variety of outdoor equipment and its functional use.
  • Ability to perform general maintenance and repairs to recreational equipment.
  • Knowledge of lifesaving techniques applied to skiing, climbing, hiking and other outdoor recreation activities.
  • Progressively responsible computer experience to include spreadsheet and database experience is required.
  • Requires carrying up to 40 pounds over long distances.
  • Must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and provide an annual copy of their Official DMV driving record.
  • The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
  • Must be able to work independently and unsupervised while delivering high quality curriculum and risk management for all mountain based programs.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
