Duties

Help

The Senior Health Physicist in the Materials Safety and Licensing Branch serves as the leading authority and technical expert in the areas of radiation protection and health physics activities related to licensing and regulation of byproduct materials. Duties of the Senior Health Physicist include:

  • Serving as the lead for complex and challenging technical and policy matters related to the safety and licensing of byproduct materials.
  • Guiding the strategy and vision for nationwide licensing of emerging fusion technologies and leading the agency’s technical and regulatory preparedness activities for fusion regulation and other novel uses of byproduct materials.
  • Leading development of policies and guidance, development of technical positions for national standards, regulatory guides, rules and regulations, and implementation of process improvements.
  • Providing technical advice to the supervisor and staff and assist supervisor in organizing and accomplishing work, and coaching, mentoring, and training junior technical staff.
  • Providing technically authoritative advice and input to the senior NRC managers, supervisor, staff, licensees, government officials in other organizations, and international stakeholders regarding implementation of programs or projects in the branch’s scope.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.  

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

1. Broad and extensive knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of health physics/radiological protection, relevant to the application of NRC rules, policies, procedures, and safety standards for byproduct materials regulation, including using available information and risk insights to support decisions.

2. Demonstrated ability to perform independent evaluations and reviews of programs, issues, or problems which document program performance, set precedent, or establish policy.

3. Ability to plan, lead, and manage complex projects and assessments involving the development of licensing actions, rulemaking packages, regulatory guidance, Commission policy, or technical reports.

4. Significant experience and skill in written and oral communication to a diverse audience regarding complex technical, policy, and process matters, which includes engagement of diverse viewpoints and the ability to develop resolution to issues.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is experience applying the principles of nuclear safety, radiation protection, and NRC regulations and guidance related to the use of byproduct material.

Education

  1. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

Additional information

The duty location of this position is Rockville, MD. In general, employees are expected to be in the office at a minimum of 4 days per pay period.  Telework schedules, including full-time telework, are approved, on a case-by-case basis. If selected, telework will be determined in accordance with Agency policy and the Collective Bargaining Agreement, if applicable.
