Duties

Help

As a Chemical and Medical Countermeasures Scientific Advisor, you will performing the following duties:

  • As an nationally recognized expert, you will provide technical advice and consultation on matters and priorities pertaining to international biodefense, biological security, biosafety, and global health security.
  • Determine the program priorities, recommend necessary levels of support, propose new and/or modified biodefense research or other initiatives for funding of new and innovative initiatives to meet critical program needs.
  • Assist the Director, OBRS in managing the integration of biodefense management planning into NIAID's strategic framework.
  • Serve as an expert advisor on the NIAID Strategic Plan for Biodefense Research that outlines plans for addressing research needs in the broad area of bioterrorism and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
  • Support an extramural research infrastructure of academic, industry, and federal laboratories via contract, interagency agreement, grant, and cooperative agreement initiatives for the early- stage development of therapeutics and medical countermeasures.
  • Identify new opportunities in translational exploratory/developmental research that may directly advance the discovery of novel treatment strategies that address serious morbidity and mortality after acute exposure to highly toxic chemical threats.
  • Plan, direct, and implement the work of a subordinate staff through the leadership and first-level supervisor of one GS-0601-15 Health Scientist Administrator and one contractor.

Qualifications

In order to quality for the Chemical and Medical Countermeasures Scientific Advisor, GS-0601 position at the GS-15 level, you must have:

Education requirement:

You possess a Bachelor's degree, or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained).And

Additional experience

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing strategic planning and management of biodefense programs for a biomedical research organization; serving as an expert on global biodefense threats and related prevention and treatment efforts; and managing operations and resources for a chemical countermeasures program.
