The primary purpose of this position, Archivist, GS-1420-12 is to serve as an archivist at Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command, an Air Force Major Command (MAJCOM) at home station. Responsible for performing the archival activities of the command's archives, classified and unclassified, paper, and electronics.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-1420, Archivist Series.

ONLY EXPERIENCE OBTAINED BY THE CLOSING DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE CONSIDERED.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
A. Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/ or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Experience:
Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicant must have one (1) year of specialized experience at a level close to the work of this position that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform. Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11), pay band or equivalent. Specialized experience includes collecting, accessioning and archiving materials in accordance with professional standards; the knowledge of standard methods, techniques, concepts and principles of archival arrangement and cataloging in order to perform independent assignments in organizing and cataloging; preparing retrieval aids; and conducting research in histories, records and other primary and secondary materials.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Professional knowledge of general archival principals and procedures including but not limited to; the arrangement, content, and servicing of historical collections and working knowledge of other collections and procedures to access them using multiple research sources, methodology, and techniques.
2. Thorough knowledge and skill in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to issues of information classification, marking and/or release.
3. Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used to assist researchers and staff members in locating and retrieving documents, microfilm, audio tapes and other archival materials.
4. A working knowledge of protection methods used for historical documents.
5. Skill in organizing information in a logical and easily understood manner for use by researchers.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work is primarily sedentary with some walking and standing in conjunction with travel and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. May carry light items such as papers, books, or small computer components. The work does not require any special physical effort.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in a typical office setting with carrying and lifting up to 15 pounds and with visits to various other floors, buildings, or offices to support projects. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
