Duties

Help

  • Educates cadet-athletes on healthy eating habits and conducts research to prevent and treat illnesses for 190+ cadet-athletes within the NCAA Division I football team.
  • Assists in directing and managing the budgeting, purchasing, payment, invoicing, and distribution of performance meals for football cadet-athletes, to include game day and travel support, training table menus, catered meal support, fueling stations, and dietary/nutritional supplements in compliance with NCAA regulations and USAFA Department policies and procedures.
  • Attends to all home and away football games, traveling in advance of the football team's arrival to manage and implement the sports nutrition program.
  • Works directly with the football Director of Operations on development of hotel menu guidelines & banquet event orders (BEOs), setup/flow of buffet line, and oversight of all food-related requirements for team at home and on the road.
  • Responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the football fueling station by maintaining appropriate supply levels and placing orders through other AD food vendor contracts, stocking, and monitoring inventory/usage within football locker room, meeting rooms, weight room and practice field.
  • Oversees and ensures execution of optimal hydration practices for football team to include the purchasing and distribution of hydration products for daily football practices, hotel, and game day support.
  • Works collaboratively and engages in regular Sports Nutrition Department team coordination and meetings.
  • Assists with the planning, development, organization, implementation, and evaluation of all projects that support the vision of USAFA's Division I Sports Nutrition Program.
  • Works with an interdisciplinary team to communicate and coordinate nutrition programming appropriate to the needs and health of football cadet-athletes.
  • Provides nutrition counseling to football cadet-athletes on diet and performance nutrition principles for training, competition, exercise or injury recovery, weight management, hydration, and supplementation.
  • Develops evidence-based hydration protocols for football cadet-athletes.
  • Football training table, practice, and game-day meal support, require the direct management of meals.
  • Educates and addresses nutritional challenges to performance such as food allergies, bone mineral density concerns, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion or deficiency, vitamin D deficiency, return-to-play, eating/body image disorders, and other nutrition-related deficiencies.
  • Utilizes body composition and nutritional assessments to educate, evaluate, and monitor cadet-athlete health, wellness, and performance consistent with medical principles and best-practices.
  • Assists in the coordination and development of nutritional education and outreach to cadet-athletes including nutrition labeling, grocery store tours, dining hall tours, social media, and nutritional interventions with the football team.
  • Serves as a member of the Athletic Department and USAFA eating disorder interdisciplinary team, working with team physicians to coordinate, recognize, evaluate, and provide early intervention of disordered eating.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of nutritional strategies toward meeting desired outcomes and maintain current and accurate documentation (AF approved medical charting system) as it relates to patient care current with medical privacy standards (HIPAA).
  • Assists in the development of sport nutrition program, research trends, implements best-practices, and evaluates effectiveness of nutritional strategies toward meeting desired program and individual outcomes.
  • Identifies obstacles to program effectiveness, derives innovative solutions, explores/evaluates validity of interventions, and implements proactive measures to resolve shortfalls and elevate performance.
  • Assists in the research and analysis of scientific and lay reports related to nutrition and athletic performance, including nutritional supplements and diets, translating findings into sound advice for coaches, medical staff, and cadet-athletes.
  • Be knowledgeable of and fully comply with all applicable NCAA conferences, USAFA and DoD rules and regulations.
  • Final reports, memos, and presentations will adhere to AF standards at a minimum and be of a professional quality representation of the Athletic Department/USAFA's strategic brand.
  • Maintains knowledge of departmental activities, sports schedules, and procedures.
  • Maintains professional competency and skills required for professional practice, including but not limited to current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition.
  • Maintains clinical privileges and credentialing through 10th Medical Group.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifying Experience:

  • A master's degree or higher from an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited.
  • Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) is required.
  • Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) with active status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (www.cdrnet.org).
  • At least 2 years of experience in NCAA Division I athletics, including at least 1 year of experience working closely with a football program is highly desired.
  • Must be able to attain the Board Certification as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) within 12 months of hire.
  • Have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Knowledge of food safety procedures and working with food service operations.
  • Skill in excellent communication, presentation, and counseling techniques.
  • Excellent organization skills with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of eating disorders/disordered eating signs and symptoms.
  • Must have knowledge of complementary medicine, ergogenic aids, and nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements.
  • Maintenance of yearly continuing education in the field of sports dietetics required.
  • Must have experience with demonstrated ability to problem solve, plan, and communicate (written and oral) program objectives.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Must have the endurance and physical ability to move throughout various athletic venues, such as multi-level stadiums, sports fields, and other athletic department facilities.
  • Must be able to stand, bend and stoop and lift to 20 pounds independently.

Education
