NIH established ODS in 1995 in response to a congressional mandate described in the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994. The mission of ODS is to advance and disseminate research on dietary supplements to foster knowledge and optimize health across the lifespan. The office's primary responsibilities are to 1) explore the potential role of dietary supplements as a significant part of the efforts of the United States to improve health care, 2) promote scientific study of the benefits of dietary supplements in maintaining health and preventing chronic disease and other health-related conditions, 3) conduct and coordinate scientific research within NIH relating to dietary supplements, 4) collect and compile the results of scientific research relating to dietary supplements, and 5) advise the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary for Health, the Director of NIH, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration on issues relating to dietary supplements.

The incumbent of this position will perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities relating to the administration of a large research grants program involving epidemiologic, basic and clinical studies, and will serve as a staff specialist for a significant segment of a subject matter or program area and provide technical guidance to the scientific community in planning, coordinating, and evaluating proposed research projects and programs of interest to the agency. The incumbent will judge the relative value of research being proposed or continued against specified goals.
