Duties

Help
  • Collects patient samples when necessary. Receives patient's specimens of blood, urine, stool, microbiological and viral cultures, tissue, body fluids and cytological specimens.
  • Performs clinical laboratory tests on specimens as ordered. Identifies unusual results or interferences that cause erroneous results.
  • Processes laboratory specimens for shipment to reference laboratories using acceptable laboratory procedures.
  • Conducts necessary quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures.
  • Assists in training laboratory personnel, staff and students in the performance of authorized clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance methods, instrument maintenance, and the implications of various results.
  • Operates, calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots all blood bank, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology analyzers, in addition to laboratory centrifuges.
  • Performs preliminary steps for instrument setup, function verification and operation for instrumentation.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • IAW DoDM 6440.02, high complexity testing personnel must meet the qualification requirements of section 493.1489 of 42 CFR and have earned an associate degree or higher in a laboratory science,
  • or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution and be certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), American Medical.
  • Must possess a current license issued by the State in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is required.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing any two or more of the following; testing procedures in a clinical laboratory, calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments, preparing samples for testing, and documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
