Salary: GS-12: $92,619 (Step 01) to $120,401(Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

As a Biologist within the Wetland and Aquatic Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Collecting Burmese pythons and other invasive reptiles in the Greater Everglades Ecosystem, conducting euthanasia, identifying reptiles, conducting field radiotelemetry, collecting field data towards movements, population vital rates, preparing and submitting applications for research and land-access permits.
  • Developing a research program related to quantitative modeling and evaluation of animal populations and their habitats focusing on the southeastern U.S., utilizing research methods that can provide scientific basis for natural resource management decisions.
  • Maintaining and modifying a PostgreSQL/PostGIS geospatial database that contains wildlife data for long-term storage and efficient retrieval for several species.
  • Performing analyses of complex sea turtle and python datasets (including capture-mark-recapture data, with spatial data derived from acoustic, satellite-tracking and VHF tracking devices, isotope data, and genetics data) using PostgresSQL and Program R.
  • Disseminating research results on the ecological impacts and management of Burmese Pythons and other invasive giant constrictors to a variety of interested parties, including other researchers, state, federal and territorial agencies, university cooperators, and the public via final reports, peer-reviewed scientific journals; making presentations on findings to scientific and conservation organizations.
  • Operating a government owned/leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands- The field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment - Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
  • Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.**OR B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-12:

In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.

Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include: performing radio telemetry and catching, handling and measuring large reptiles. Applicants must have advanced skills in R programming (e.g., writing functions) and have working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and modeling movement and survival data.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
