Duties

As a Social Scientist your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides conservation social science technical support to efforts in the field, region or Program addressing complex wildlife or other natural resource conservation issues with both social and ecological drivers.
  • Analyzes study data and prepares written and graphical descriptions of results. Interprets socioeconomic and demographic information in order to better understand and explain population and demographics and their relationship to management issues.
  • Communicates conservation social science efforts to internal and external audiences to support growth and development of a social science community of practice across the Service.
  • Consolidates responses and develops reports on evaluation metrics for various training and outreach efforts and products and recommends refinements based on results.
  • Coordinates development of products such as newsletters, podcasts, broadcasts, and webinars. Maintains schedule for production and release of training and outreach products.
  • You MUST submit official or unofficial College Transcript(s) showing the date degree is conferred.
  • If your degree has not been conferred, you must provide a letter from the school documenting current standing, degree being obtained and expected graduation date, with your application package, in addition to your most recent College Transcript(s)
  • Your degree must be conferred no later than 06/30/2024

Qualifications

All applicants must have received a bachelors or advanced degree within the previous two years or two years from the date of an individual's discharge or release from the uniformed services.

Only experience and education obtained by June 30, 2024 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:

  1. I have a degree in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR
  2. I have a combination of education and experience that provided me with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR
  3. I have four (4) years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that I have acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

Minimum Qualification [GS-7]:
  1. One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-5 in the Federal service. Experience may include: 1) assist with applying conservation social science disciplines to improve established natural resource management practices and processes; 2) analyze conservation data to provide detailed reports of findings to various audiences; 3) create presentations and briefings to provide conservation social science training and outreach. OR
  2. I have successfully completed one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate education in human dimensions of natural resources, environmental studies, political science, sociology, or a closely-related field which provided me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. OR
  3. I have Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A): Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a field of study that demonstrates the competencies required by this position with either (1) a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 based on a 4.0 scale; (2) a 3.5 GPA based on a 4.0 scale for all required courses completed in a qualifying major field of study at either the time of application or during the last two years of your undergraduate curriculum; (3) class standing of upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or a major subdivision of the college; or, (4) membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society certified by the Association of College Honor Societies, excluding freshman honor societies. OR
  4. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement.
Minimum Qualification [GS-9]:
  1. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in federal service. Experience may include: 1) Utilize conservation social science disciplines to improve natural resource management practices and processes. Examples include familiarity with human values, attitudes and behaviors; stakeholder engagement; sociodemographic, conflict resolution; or strategic communications. 2) Managing project logistics and coordination, such as database management, protocol development or developing timelines. 3) Contributing to development of tools and resources for natural resource practitioners focused on integrating conservation social science into natural resource planning or management. OR
  2. I have successfully completed two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in human dimensions of natural resources, environmental studies, political science, sociology, or a closely-related field which provided me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

May be selected at any grade level advertised with non-competitive promotion potential to the target grade. Non-competitive promotion to the target grade is based on time-in-grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the higher graded duties.

Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

  • Knowledge of conservation social science concepts, principles, and practices as applied to natural resources management sufficient to provide technical support, analyze data, write reports, and present technically accurate products/presentations in various media to various audience.
  • Skill in reporting results of conservation social science research into products for technical and nontechnical audiences, including executive summaries, technical reports, white papers, and presentations.
