Duties

Help

1. Starts, operates, adjusts and maintains manual or automatic controlled boilers and auxiliary equipment in a steam or high temperature water boiler plant that requires continuous attention.
2. Performs various operational repairs, seasonal, and preventive maintenance
on boilers, heat exchangers, and associated auxiliary equipment
3. Operates, repairs and performs regular checks of industrial water treatment equipment installed to provide suitable quality water for boiler operation.
4. Uses and maintains tools and equipment.
5. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5400 Industrial Equipment Operation Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
Operation of Boilers
Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
Use of Measuring Instruments
Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (other than blueprinting reading)
Dexterity and Safety

Ideal candidate: experience with the starting, operation, adjustment, and stopping of single fuel powered boilers fueled by natural gas and auxiliary equipment and other equipment in a steam or high temperature hot water boiler plant. Has operated and controlled auxiliary equipment requiring continuous attention to monitor efficiency and control formation of pollutants in accordance with local, state, and Federal pollution control requirements. Operated a variety of auxiliary equipment such as pumps, water heaters, fans, deaerators, reverse osmosis equipment, and sodium water softeners. Maintained constant observation of flow meters and charts to determine boiler plant status, whether it is meeting or exceeding demands, rate of fuel consumption, etc.


Performed various operational repairs and preventive maintenance on boilers, auxiliary, and pollution control equipment. Cleaned burners, oils and greases moving parts, packs valves and pumps, cleans oil strainers and performed other routine operational maintenance. Located and repaired limited electrical problems in oil burner controls, safety devices and other equipment.

Has collected water samples and tested feed water, boiler water and condensate using standard chemical tests; determined appropriate treatment to control corrosion and chemical concentrations; removed impurities and entrapped gases; and stabilized fluctuating water conditions.


PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
