Duties

Help
  • You will serve as ELECTRONICS MECHANIC (VERY LOW FREQUENCY TRANSMITTER) in the TRANSMITTER DEPT, NAVRADSTA (T) JIM CREEK, OSO, NCTAMS PAC DET PUGET SOUND, SIVERDALE of JIM CREEK, ARLINGTON, WA.
  • You will tune, test, overhaul, repair, modify, calibrate, and install communications electronic equipment.
  • You will operate, maintain, test, align, and repair 1 MEGAWATT, VLF transmitting system (AN/FRT-3) which include but are not limited to: Complex AC and DC voltage control systems and water purification and cooling systems.
  • You will operate, maintain, test, align, and repair digital communication systems equipment interface devices which include but are not limited to: Audio and DC levels converters, binary data synchronizers, and computer interface lines/modems.
  • You will conduct training of other less qualified personnel.
  • You will prepare and maintain daily maintenance logs, reports, and records.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK WITHOUT NORMAL SUPERVISION:

  • Experience applying a good working knowledge of electronic theory, methods and practices included, but not limited to Class A, AB, B and C radio and audio frequency amplifiers.
  • Experience working with computers and using Microsoft Office Suite (MS) of programs such as MS Word, Access, Excel and Windows NT.
  • Experience communicating both orally and in writing.
  • Experience interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams, programmable logic circuitry, control ladders, functional drawings and graphs associated with electronic equipment and circuitry is required.
  • Experience utilizing a wide variety or electronic test instruments.
  • Experience utilizing hand tools including screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, and soldering irons and in the use of micro-soldering techniques.

Additional information

This position requires rotating shift work. The incumbent is required to stand eight-hour watches on a rotating shift basis as senior person of the watch.

Must be able to lift objects up to 40 pounds, and will occasionally be required to lift items up to several hundred pounds in conjunction with weight handling equipment.

May be subject to periods of standing, bending, lying or sitting in cramped and/or awkward positions.

Position requires good manual and finger dexterity for working on delicate equipment. Near and far vision correctable by glasses, sufficient for reading small print required. Color vision required to detect standard color code of wiring. Ability to hear normal conversation required (hearing aid permitted).

May be subject to recall, without notice, to work in the event of critical equipment casualty. Subject to sporadic high stress conditions resulting from equipment casualties.

Occasionally required to work in environments that include spaces or equipment which are oily, dusty or greasy, spaces which are noisy, outdoors in both high and low temperature and humidity extremes, spaces which are not well lighted, areas which cause extensive soiling of skin and clothes, areas which have unstable, wet, or oily surfaces, and areas with irritating or hazardous chemicals and fumes.

Occasionally required to work on roofs, scaffolds or platforms up to sixty feet above ground/floor, and in areas with high-density radio frequency fields which cause stray but normally non-hazardous shock potential to exist. Must be able to climb ladders.

Will frequently work on electronic equipment with potentials up to 250,000 RF volts at 1500 amps, 20,000 DC volts and works occasionally on incoming electrical power distribution equipment with potential up to 4160 volts at 160 amps.

May be exposed to sharp edges, flying and falling objects, noise, etc. which requires the use of safety equipment such as glasses, ear plugs, safety shoes, hard hats, safety belts, respirators, and other safety devices as needed to provide protection. May be exposed to high voltage and hot soldering irons that can cause shocks and burns. May be exposed to various cleaning agents that could cause irritation to the skin.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
